BMO Financial Group Business Development Manager in Winnipeg, Manitoba


The Business Development Manager, Automotive Finance is accountable to develop, grow and retain profitable third party relationships within a geographic territory (Auto, RV and Marine), aggressively marketing BMO products and services to increase volume and dollar value of transactions referred. The Business Development Manager will have a solid understanding of the Automotive Finance strategic direction and business goals to meet targets as assigned.

This role will develop and execute a relationship plan to significantly expand the Banks market share and revenue base through increased referrals from third parties (i.e. brokers (mortgage / investment)/dealers). The Relationship Development Specialist is accountable to develop an effective external network to support the identification of new and increased business opportunities. The Business Development Manager will have a solid understanding of the Automotive Finance strategic direction and business goals to meet targets as assigned

Key Accountabilities

Relationship Management:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with third party referral sources (i.e. brokers/dealers) within an assigned territory to maximize market presence and increase our market share.

  • Provide subject matter expertise to the Senior Management Team on market conditions and trends to maintain a high level of environmental awareness,Retain and expand existing Automotive Finance third party relationships to achieve portfolio retention, sales, service, and profitability objectives.

  • Develop, implement and maintain an effective business development and community involvement plan to protect and expand share of profitable Automotive Finance business, developing and utilizing an extensive network of referral resources Accountable for proactive, focused, profitable sales of Automotive Finance products and services based on referrals/prospects, and knowledge of local market.

  • Proactively initiate a strong working relationship between Automotive Finance Client Servicing and the client, providing information and education to ensure applications are of high quality and credit/investment documentation and information is accurate and complete.

  • Establish linkages with internal and external partners to leverage sales and referral opportunities, improve share of wallet, and to acquire and retain profitable relationships

  • Develop an understanding of cross channel sales referral processes, local market, competition and existing business relationships to maximize share of wallet, increase revenue, and to acquire new Automotive Finance relationships.

  • Provide timely and effective problem resolution, escalating customer issues as necessary.

  • Establish and enhance the Banks profile by participating in meaningful and focused business and community activities and seeking out and creating opportunities to generate new Automotive Finance business

  • Participate in industry forums and conferences to keep apprised of all industry trends, competitive insights, products and services


  • Develop, implement, review and revise a 3-12 month rolling plan focusing on identifying client needs and opportunities that will result in meeting or exceeding sales and service targets.

  • Review and monitor sales, revenue and service performance against plan, identify gaps, and share best practices

  • Contribute to Automotive Finance Business Plan (as appropriate), regarding new business opportunities, increased profitability and portfolio growth potential, based on knowledge of local marketplace

  • Review sales and service plans on an ongoing basis to reflect opportunities and changes in assigned portfolio and competitive local market environment; develop an action plan, and update Senior Manager, Sales on any changes that may impact the Automotive Finance Business Plan.

Risk Management

  • Protect the Banks assets and maintain the quality of originations by maintaining a clear understanding of lending / investment regulations, Policies and Procedures, legal and ethical requirements, process requirements and established risk guidelines.

  • Adhere to Know Your Client Rules and Bank Policies and Procedures for the prevention of loss due to fraud, counterfeiting, money laundering, or defalcation; identify and report suspicious and other reportable transactions or patterns of activity that are suspected to be related to money laundering Investigate and analyze quality of new business opportunities, understanding business requirements and quality of operations to ensure referral business is of acceptable quality prior to entering into contractual agreement.
