BMO GAM’s Responsible Investment team oversees the firm’s ESG initiatives and supports all investment teams in integrating ESG considerations into the investment process. In addition to supporting investment processes, the team owns and executes on BMO GAM’s firm wide commitments to responsible investment, develops thought leadership on emerging ESG topics and employs a progressive approach to stewardship and active ownership activities. The team works with both internal and external stakeholders across all sales channels in both asset management and the wider wealth businesses.

The Social Equality Manager, Responsible Investment conducts investment research to support stewardship, portfolio and business objectives including the development of new investment, corporate engagement and thought leadership strategies. They work closely with investment teams and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure BMO GAM contributes to and advances social equality in our investments, operations and industry.

  • Thematic subject matter expert leading research, stewardship, investment, reporting and stakeholder relationship activities on social equality matters including labour rights, indigenous reconciliation, diversity, equity and inclusion, racial justice, social supply chain issues and human rights.

  • Research and write industry-leading thought leadership pieces on emerging social equality themes relevant to both institutional and retail investor audiences.

  • Represent BMO GAM on social-related collaborative investor initiatives by leading engagement dialogues with investee companies represented in our client portfolios, and support engagement dialogues conducted by investment teams.

  • Support public policy submissions on social equality on behalf of the asset management business

  • Build and maintain partnerships with external organizations working on social equality for the purpose of collaborative research, engagement or industry efforts.

  • Work with portfolio managers and ESG Integration Manager to support the integration of material and salient social risks and opportunities in the investment analysis process across asset classes.

  • Recommend and help coordinate transparent reporting on social equality impact metrics across all funds.

  • Contribute to product development across asset classes by conducting research and working with product and investment teams to create social equality-related investment parameters

  • Recommend amendments to our corporate governance guidelines related to social equality to inform proxy voting strategy

  • Coordinate and align with BMO Financial Group on public commitments related to social equality to ensure consistent and cohesive external messaging

  • Represent BMO GAM in the public domain on macro social issues including at industry conferences, media interviews and public articles and blogs

Customer Service Advisory

  • Provides strategic input into business decisions as a subject matter expert.

  • Makes recommendations to senior leaders on strategy and new initiatives, based on an in-depth understanding of the thematic area, portfolio or investment sector

  • Acts as a subject matter expert on relevant regulations and policies.

  • Network with industry contacts to gain competitive insights and best practices.

  • Leads the team in planning, researching, testing, and presenting new investment or stewardship strategies.

  • Presents results of group studies to a broad audience, both internally and externally as needed.

Relationship Management

  • May generally, interact with large and complex clients, territories, issues and relationships.

  • Acts as the prime subject matter expert for internal/external stakeholders.

Data Analytics

  • Monitors and tracks performance and addresses any issues.

  • Designs and produces regular and ad-hoc reports..

Other

  • Leads the execution of operational programs; assesses and adapts as needed to ensure quality of execution

  • Leads change management programs of varying scope and type, including readiness assessments, planning, stakeholder management, execution, evaluation and sustainment of initiatives.

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of direct or relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education, experience and advanced understanding of the functional area and the market, preferably in Asset Management

  • At least 5 years of experience working on at least one or more social equality issues (such as: diversity, equity and inclusion, human rights, labour rights and workplace issues, indigenous rights and reconciliation, modern slavery or good work practices in the supply chain, racial justice, equal access to products and solutions) applied in a sustainability, advocacy , investment or active ownership context

  • Experience using quantitative and qualitative and data and the ability to translate complexities into concrete recommendations for investment decision-makers

  • Experience with stakeholder engagement and relationships, preferably in a North American context

  • In-depth and demonstrated verbal & written communication skills - Expert.
