BMO Financial Group Senior Counsel, Capital Markets Litigation in Toronto, Ontario


The Senior Counsel, Capital Markets Litigation will provide an advanced level of legal advice and services for litigation, regulatory and legal risk matters in which BMO Capital Markets may be engaged, in order to achieve organizational goals while managing legal risk.The role is part of thelitigation team that supports the Capital Markets business, and reports into the Associate General Counsel, Litigation, BMO Capital Markets.

The Senior Counsel will draw upon advanced knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of law and governing legislation. Additionally, they will possess strong knowledge of the financial services industry, and the regulatory environment in which BMO Financial Group operates.

Key Accountabilities

  • Direct and manage a diverse and complex portfolio of litigation and regulatory matters relating to the Capital Markets business.

  • Oversee, exercise judgment and resolve complex legal, regulatory and litigation issues, typically with significant line of business implications.

  • Provide oversight of external counsel.

  • Provide interpretation and guidance to the business on relevant legislation and regulatory policies.

  • Proactively identify and manage risk to protect our customers and our brand.

  • Exercise judgment on complex, confidential and sensitive decisions. Typically expected to resolve most day-to-day issues and/or escalate with appropriate analysis and recommendation.

  • Participate in devising strategy and making recommendations to manage risk.



  • Law degree and a license to practice law in a Canadian province.

  • Knowledge of business and regulatory environment in which BMO Financial Group operates.

  • At least 8 years of litigation experience, gained in a law firm or in-house environment.

  • Strong litigation experience, with a preference for securities, regulatory or class action background. Experience with employment law is considered an asset.
