Senior Advisor, Organizational Design & Effectiveness

The Senior Advisor, Organizational Design & Effectiveness (ODE) provides advice and counsel on ODE opportunities primarily for the senior leader / executive population to execute on HR and business/group strategies. The role proactively partners with business and HR leaders and completes specific strategic / operational ODE work to deliver business results and/or minimize risk.

Key accountabilities include end-to-end consultation and facilitation of all phases of ODE initiatives including: strategic positioning, current state diagnostics (qualitative and quantitative), design principles, design options / recommendations, implementation and change management.

The Senior Advisor also supports the Senior Leader Job Design and Evaluation with a focus on increased organizational effectiveness, providing clarity about roles, accountabilities, authority to make decisions, and collaboration required to offer a differentiated customer experience and drive BMO's growth agenda. Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.


Organization Design & Effectiveness (ODE) Initiatives

  • Leads / supports the execution of strategic ODE initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to deliver on business and financial goals.

  • Conducts independent analysis, develops ODE solutions and makes recommendations to senior leaders based on an understanding of the business strategy and stakeholder needs.

  • Provides advice and guidance on implementation of a wide range of ODE solutions; includes organization efficiency (e.g., number of layers, span of control, compression) and organization effectiveness (e.g., role clarity, accountabilities, decision making authority & collaboration) and organization development.

  • Leads/participates in the design, implementation and management of core business/group processes as required.

  • Develops business cases as required by identifying needs, analysing potential options and assessing expected return on investment.

  • Collaborates across BMO to develop communications strategies and ensure consistency of messaging, in order to positively influence or change behaviour.

  • Assists in building change management plans of varying scope and type; leads or participates in a variety of change management activities including readiness assessments, planning, stakeholder management, execution, evaluation and sustainment of initiatives.

  • Operates at a group/enterprise-wide level and serves as a specialist resource to senior leaders and stakeholders.

  • Provides thoughtful and effective ODE coaching to senior leaders to maximize skills/capabilities of the group and creates an environment of high performance and openness.

  • Applies ODE expertise and thinks creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non-routine.

  • Acts as a prime ODE subject matter expert for internal/external stakeholders and provides advisory support to HR Business Partners to support achieving business outcomes.

  • Builds effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders.

Industry Trends and Emerging Practices

  • Identifies emerging issues and trends to inform decision-making.

  • Acts as a subject matter expert on relevant regulations and policies.

  • Implements changes in response to shifting trends.

  • Networks with industry contacts to gather and identify competitive insights and best practices.

  • Enhances subject matter expertise and keeps abreast of organization design trends by reading journals and articles, and assisting in the research, assessment and BMO-customization of internal and external information relevant to the theory and practice of organization design.

ODE Insights and Analytics

  • Designs and produces regular and ad-hoc reports, and dashboards.

  • Provides insights on organization health & executive portfolio health, and addresses any issues as required.

  • Breaks down strategic problems and analyses data and information to provide insights and recommendations.

ODE Governance

  • Contributes to the ongoing development and consistent application of ODE strategy, framework and principles by making improvement recommendations to existing ODE processes, tools and materials and by continually testing materials with HR business partners and business leaders.

  • Supports the design, development, and implementation of ODE tools and training required to deliver business results.

  • Works collaboratively with other ODE practitioners to determine opportunities to refine ODE efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Provides historical data, analysis and insights on role relativity, internally and externally.

  • Manages / supports Job design and documentation of Senior Leadership jobs.

  • Completes / supports enterprise-wide executive and managing director evaluations based on Korn Ferry Hay methodology.

  • Works with Job & Position Management to ensure senior leader information is up to date and accurate.


  • Typically, 7+ years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • In-depth/Expert knowledge of organization design/organization development principles, process and methodology.

  • Experience in Korn Ferry Hay (preferred) or other Job Evaluation methodology is an asset.

  • Research skills - In-depth/Expert.
