The Disciplined Equity team manages approximately $25B CAD of active equity strategies spanning a variety of geographies, cap spectrums, and styles. The team employs a hybrid fundamental-quantitative approach, investing based on fundamental principles and implementing through a rigorous quantitative process. The team consists of both fundamental and quantitative professionals who are jointly responsible for all steps in the investment process, starting with research and extending through portfolio management. The team is located in Toronto, Chicago, and Milwaukee.
The team is looking for a senior-level Portfolio Manager to be based in Toronto, focusing primarily on the implementation of our Canadian stock selection strategies. This position will oversee all aspects of the investment process, including research and portfolio management, as well as contribute to overall team strategy and business development efforts through growing and servicing both internal and external channels. This will be a leadership role with significant potential to drive both investment and business outcomes, as well as potentially manage junior members of the team, and will interact with portfolios managers and researchers across disciplines and locations.
Primary responsibilities include:
Implementing an integrated fundamental + quantitative active equity investment process
Generating fundamental insights to be implemented in a quantitatively-oriented approach to stock selection, portfolio construction, and risk management
Identifying and implementing opportunities for improvement in our investment process, including enhancements in stock selection, portfolio construction, risk management, and liquidity and transaction cost management
Working with quantitative research analysts to translate investment insights into a systematic, data-driven investment process
Performing quantitative and/or fundamental analysis to understand and validate proposed trades, as well as portfolio exposures
Ensuring consistent incorporation of fundamental analysis into our investment process
Conducting fundamental research on individual companies, sectors and thematic trends
Monitoring sell-side and academic research for the potential to improve our investment management process
- Represent our process to internal and external clients: educate internal sales and client service teams, meet with existing and potential clients in the institutional and retail channels, and become a trusted thought partner with internal channels including Multi Asset and Wealth channels
Leadership and management
Help drive the business direction and growth strategy for the Canadian business
Serve as a face of the business to internal and external constituents, including product, sales, client service, technology, and operations
Manage junior members of the team
Minimum 10 years portfolio management experience in the asset management industry
Experience with Canadian investment strategies preferred but not required
Experience working with clients preferred
Graduate degree in business (MBA), finance, economics, mathematics or similar field preferred
CFA charterholder or CIM required
Candidates may have either a quantitative or fundamental investment background provided they have sufficient analytical background
The ideal candidate has:
Desire to work on an integrated quantitative + fundamental investment team
Strong understanding of either quantitative or fundamental investing, ideally with an appreciation for the other discipline
Portfolio management experience
Leadership and management experience – the ability to drive a business forward, identify and execute on a growth plan, and potentially manage junior team members
Strong teamwork and communication skills
Strong attention to detail along with demonstrated technical skills
Strong presentation skills, including the ability to articulate complicated investment concepts in a way that resonates with various audiences, including consultants, institutional clients, and retail channels
Comfort with technology and programming, with coding experience in R, Python, Matlab, and/or SQL attractive but not required
