The Legal Analyst, P&BB Canada provides legal support to BMO’s Canadian Personal & Business Banking businesses.
The Legal Analyst works in collaboration with the lawyers supporting the P&BB Canada business and reports to the Associate General Counsel. This role operates at various levels within a highly regulated and fast paced, deadline-sensitive environment and is responsible for triaging, managing and providing advice on a variety of inquiries and escalations from front line bank employees, including the group that handles customers’ inquiries and complaints.
Although the Legal Analyst is generally expected to respond to inquiries independently, they may also engage one of the P&BB Canada lawyers for support on more complex matters. The Legal Analyst relies on their strong legal knowledge and the bank’s policies and procedures in providing responses, and exercises judgment to provide advice directly to business partners or to work in collaboration with P&BB Canada lawyers.
Responds to internal/external inquiries and escalations.
Gathers relevant facts, documents, policies and procedures,
Reviews and analyses the relevant information to provide advice and guidance to business partners.
Identifies opportunities and legal, regulatory and reputation risks and engages counsel to support, if needed.
Prepares, drafts and revises legal documents and reports.
Assists with drafting of policies to ensure compliance with laws.
Delivers timely, accurate and efficient service and support.
Focus is primarily on the Canadian personal and business banking teams within BMO.
Paralegal or Law Clerk with 7 years or more of experience
Familiarity with BMO’s processes, procedures and support areas, would be an asset, but is not mandatory for those outside BMO who are considering this position.
Expertise in banking law, estates, trusts considered an asset.
Experience in the financial sector considered an asset.
Bilingualism considered an asset, but not mandatory.
Advanced research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Sound judgment and capacity to identify risks.
Ability to work independently.
Strong collaboration & team skills
Strong verbal & written communication skills.
Technical proficiency gained through education and/or experience.
