BMO GAM’s Responsible Investment team oversees the firm’s ESG initiatives and supports all investment teams in integrating ESG considerations into the investment process. In addition to supporting investment processes, the team owns and executes on BMO GAM’s firm wide commitments to responsible investment, develops thought leadership on emerging ESG topics and employs a progressive approach to active ownership activities. The team works with both internal and external stakeholders across all sales channels in both asset management and the wider wealth businesses.

The Director of Climate Change, Responsible Investment conducts investment research to support portfolio and business objectives and the development of new investment strategies. Works closely with Portfolio Managers and the portfolio management team to capture research in the portfolio management process.

  • Work with portfolio managers to support the integration of material climate risks and opportunities in the investment analysis process across asset classes

  • Recommend and help coordinate transparent reporting on climate risk metrics across all funds (e.g. portfolio weighted carbon intensity)

  • Spearhead BMO’s representation and implementation of the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative including making top-down recommendations about data providers, measurement, goal-setting, implementation and tracking progress.

  • Coordinate with operations and investment to integrate TCFD recommendations for asset managers including climate related stress testing and scenario analysis

  • Support public policy submissions on climate change on behalf of the asset management business

  • Represent BMO GAM on climate-related collaborative investor initiatives by leading engagement dialogues with investee companies represented in our client portfolios

  • Recommend amendments to our corporate governance guidelines related to climate change to inform proxy voting strategy

  • Contribute to product development across asset classes by conducting research and working with product and investment teams to create climate-related investment parameters

  • Research and write industry leading thought leadership pieces on emerging climate change themes relevant to both institutional and retail investor audiences

  • Coordinate and align with BMO Financial Group on public commitments to climate change to ensure consistent and cohesive external messaging

  • Represent BMO GAM in the public domain on macro climate change issues including at industry conferences, media interviews and public articles and blogs

Customer Service Advisory

  • Provides strategic input into business decisions as a subject matter expert.

  • Makes recommendations to senior leaders on strategy and new initiatives, based on an in-depth understanding of the portfolio or investment sector

  • Acts as a subject matter expert on relevant regulations and policies.

  • Network with industry contacts to gain competitive insights and best practices.

  • Leads the team in planning, researching, testing, and presenting new investment strategies.

  • Presents results of group studies to a broad audience, both internally and externally as needed.

Relationship Management

  • May generally, interact with large and complex clients, territories, issues and relationships.

  • Acts as the prime subject matter expert for internal/external stakeholders.

Strategy / Strategic Initiatives

  • Leads the execution of strategic initiatives to deliver on business and financial goals.

Data Analytics

  • Monitors and tracks performance and addresses any issues.

  • Designs and produces regular and ad-hoc reports, and dashboards.

Other

  • Leads the execution of operational programs; assesses and adapts as needed to ensure quality of execution

  • Leads change management programs of varying scope and type, including readiness assessments, planning, stakeholder management, execution, evaluation and sustainment of initiatives.

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of direct or relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education, experience and advanced understanding of the functional area and the market, preferably in Asset Management

  • Experience working on climate related issues applied in an investment context (e.g. climate risk, climate scenario analysis and carbon accounting)

  • Experience using quantitative and qualitative climate data and the ability to translate complexities into concrete recommendations for investment decision-makers

  • Strong foundation in quantitative analysis, statistics, econometrics, modelling, and/or big data processing

  • In-depth organizational skills; strong attention to detail and risk
