The Investment Manager Research (“IMR”) Team works within BMO Private Wealth to provide Investment Advisors (“IA”) and Investment Counselors (“IC”) the advice and information they need for making insightful recommendations to clients. This includes oversight of the firm’s subadvisors and managed programs as well as mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (“ETFs”) and alternative investments recommendations.
This role will also lead the responsible investing efforts for Private Wealth. This includes being the “in-house” expert and key resource for IAs and ICs, finding and creating investment solutions and creating educational materials in the space.
Additional responsibilities include:
Research – universe covers mutual funds, ETFs, hedge funds, closed-end funds, segregated fund and structured products (PPN & NPPN).
Recommend Lists - The selection process incorporates both a quantitative screen, a qualitative assessment and may take into account thematic views
8-10 hedge funds encompassing the entire Canadian universe.
25-35 ETFs and 35 to 40 mutual funds
Portfolio models: - Portfolio construction and management of model portfolios) for both mutual funds and ETFs
Portfolios are diversified by factors (e.g., growth vs. value, large cap vs. small cap) and incorporate top down asset allocation shifts determined by the Investment Strategy Committee (“ISC”)
IA/IC business support:
Develop daily, monthly and quarterly publications, contribute to the research desk’s themed reports and produce ad hoc reports as needed
Conduct branch and client presentations
Provide one off recommendations, portfolio reviews and book of business reviews; provide solutions encompassing funds, ETFs and alternative business strategies
Key point of contact for risk, compliance and operations
Understand regulatory framework and stay current with its constant evolution
Manages the business relationship/interest with Morningstar
Support other groups and lines of business as needed
Participate in industry bodies and committees
The candidate requires the following skills:
At least 5+ years of experience in the Investment industry with exposure to mutual funds, ETFs alternatives.
Undergraduate or graduate degree in Business, Finance or related field
CFA / CAIA or other investment related designation is a valuable asset
Some experience with Responsible Investing and the landscape
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to work under pressure while facing multiple short-term deadlines
Intermediate to advanced level in spreadsheet analysis and modeling is required
Investment operations and/or middle office experience is a valuable asset
Well-developed relationship management, leadership and presentation skills
