The Market Manager’s (MM) mandate is to support the Managing Director in meeting the strategic revenue objectives of their assigned markets.

The Market Manager role leads a team of wealth management professionals (sales, service & support) who provide financial planning and specialized expertise in banking, investment management or wealth services to high-net-worth clients and prospects, and ensures that the integrated offer and desired client experience is delivered. The MM is responsible for effectively executing on coaching and performance management of an integrated team of market professionals.

The Market Manager will develop the strategy for the region in partnership with National Office and leads the implementation for the region for the next 3 to 5 years, ensuring that all targets are met.

The Market Manager will represent BMO Wealth Management in community and public events, supporting the overall brand image.

Managerial Leadership

  • Set appropriate context and direction for the strategic vision within the region, ensuring alignment with the vision for private banking.

  • Establish a two-way working relationship with direct reports to solicit their views on business opportunities, the working environment, and potential changes affecting their work.

  • Establish and enhance private banking’s profile in the community by participating in worthwhile business and community activities and seeking out and creating opportunities to promote private banking. This includes public speaking, presentations, customer events, employee events, community events, etc.

  • Develop internal and external networks and referrals sources to ensure the ongoing growth of the business within the region.

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with other BMO Financial Group executives in the region to ensure ongoing collaboration and clarity to drive overall business growth for BMO Financial Group.

  • Develop strong relationships with key players in the external investment community and other professional networks/associations to support the brand image of private banking within the region.

Sales/Sales Management:

  • Coaching and supporting market team members and holding them accountable for standards of excellence.

  • Setting individual and market team targets to ensure market growth and penetration.

  • Creating an effective sales culture in which individual and market team quality goals are met.

  • Providing sales management direction through review and analysis of market trend data, pipeline reports, call reports, and win/loss trends.

Strategy/ Financials:

  • Executing on BMO Private Bank defined strategies and initiatives in the assigned market.

  • Developing and implementing tactical market plans in support of BMO Private Bank strategy.

  • Providing vision, direction and leadership to market and team.

  • Ensure all team members work together to deliver the BMO Private Bank LRM/client/prospect experience.

  • Achieving financial goals for revenue/expenses/net income per business plan.

  • Leading execution of wealth strategic initiatives for Mass Affluent and High Net Worth client segments.

  • Coordinate with BMO Harris Financial Advisors’ Regional Sales Managers to achieve Mass Affluent client segment sales targets (e.g. revenue to plan, insurance sales, managed money new business sales and referrals to partners).

People Management:

  • Work in conjunction with the Managing Director to develop an effective team of highly competent market professionals; develop and maintain a reputation in the marketplace as THE recognized wealth management firm and employer of choice.

  • Talent/Performance management to include annual reviews; salary and compensation reviews.

  • Overseeing and ensuring that the team is performing effectively and collaborating effectively.

  • Building and maintaining strong linkage between Financial Advisors, Wealth Specialists and BMO Private Bank team members to present one wealth team to P&C partners.

Clients / External Marketing:

  • Creating strategies for client expansion and retention in the markets.

  • Providing an important, independent value-adding relationship contact for selected prospects and current clients.

  • Selectively managing and enhancing client relationships.

  • Providing expertise and leadership in market-related activities to ensure visibility and generate long term business development opportunities.

  • Being visible and known in the market to generate business.

  • Ensuring clients are being directed and serviced in the appropriate wealth segment offering.

Partnerships:

  • Ensure effective communication and positive relationships between BMO market segments, bank presidents, senior management, and market team members to build linkage and strengthen commitment to the BMOFG and BMO Private Bank’s strategic vision and goals.

  • Ensure all other BMO FG relevant partnerships are well managed and BMO Private Bank is well represented.

Risk Management:

  • Directly responsible and accountable as an in-market leader for the internal control system, compliance and risk management of their team and their team’s activities.

  • Responsibility to partner with the appropriate risk management teams to prevent and mitigate and potential risks.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Undergraduate degree; a professional designation (M.B.A., C.A., C.F.A.) is highly preferred.

  • Approximately 5-10 years of related experience with a background in one or more of the following areas: Private Banking, Commercial, Corporate or Investment Banking, Law, Accounting, or Investment Management.

  • Proven track record in developing and growing a related business.

  • Strong presentation skills; both written and verbal.

  • Exceptional organizational skills.

  • Excellent communicative and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to network and build profile in a given market.
