The Senior Paralegal for the litigation group supports the United State Personal and Commercial (US P&C) litigation team. He/she/they reports directly to the US P&C Associate General Counsel (AGC) for Litigation and Dispute Resolution Management, and works jointly with the AGC and other members of the US P&C litigation team, in a complex and changing environment where legal, regulatory and reputational risks must be constantly considered.

This individual has access to sensitive and confidential customer and bank information and must exercise discretion to protect the confidentiality of this information. In addition, sound judgment, organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines are essential. The individual communicates and maintains relationships not only with the legal team and other colleagues within the bank’s Legal and Regulatory Compliance Group, but also with the team’s internal clients and external counsel.

The Senior Paralegal supports litigation management by organizing and following progress of the litigation. The Senior Paralegal also contributes to the group’s success by working in collaboration with the team on internal reporting, including regular reports on litigation The Lead is responsible for driving strategic and operational efficiencies through knowledge management initiatives for the group, including tracking precedents, developing templates and implementing recommended changes. Finally, the Lead takes part in strategic objectives and projects.

The Senior Paralegal’s principal duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Assist attorneys with case organization, document management, discovery (working with internal stakeholders), and administrative tasks.

  • Assist internal counsel with management of less complex litigation, arbitrations, and investigations.

  • Support management of outside counsel and oversee budgets and invoices on litigation matters to ensure timely authorization, billing and payment working with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Under general supervision, perform tasks related to reviewing and responding to levies, garnishments, wage deduction orders, and subpoenas in multiple jurisdictions.

  • Provide case management support using the Group’s case management systems.

  • Assist in preparing, distributing and managing Legal Holds working with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Develop and assist with regular reporting for internal and external stakeholders and prepare related presentation materials.

  • Proofread reports, memos, court filings, and other documents.

  • Perform legal and non-legal fact research using various research tools, Westlaw, PACER, and other internal and external systems.

  • Help define procedures and practices within the litigation group to promote efficient workflows and handling of legal requests.

  • Work independently on special projects relating to litigation, legal and regulatory matters.

  • Communicate with internal and external counsel and business contacts on a day-to-day basis.

Ideally, the candidate should have:

  • Approximately 5-10 years experience and a Paralegal Certificate or equivalent training on the job.

  • Bachelor’s degree and large law firm or in-house experience preferred.

  • The ability to review pleadings and other documents, communicate effectively with legal and non-legal staff, filter reports for distribution and work on assigned special projects.

  • Experience in legal research, summarizing documents and analysis of data.

  • Strong computer skills (proficient knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Westlaw).

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle several projects simultaneously.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Superior matter management and organizational skills and strong writing abilities are critical.

  • Ability to receive general direction and run projects independently.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.
