Under the direction of the National Director (VP), of Wealth Planning, is accountable for the tools, resources and support of the strategic delivery of wealth planning in the various markets (Advisors/Wealth/Retail). This includes; planning technology, standardized delivery strategy, competitive oversight, quality review, tracking and reporting, compliance and regulatory insight, along as acting as a subject matter expert for overall Planning team as well for HQ projects and program.

The objective of this role is to embed the practice of wealth planning activities across the Wealth Businesses through influencing increased adoption in all LOB. As well ensure Wealth Planning Consultants are supported during high-demand times and markets are supported with value-added material for client.

The Director leads 3 teams of accredited financial planning professionals and subject matter experts;

Financial Planning tools team supports and trains on technical and practice management usage of software (eMoney & MoneyGuidePro) within various BMO Wealth Management teams. Central Planning team that provide financial planning creation support across the country for Regional Financial Planners and Private Bank relationship managers. In some cases, this may include remote client contact for end to end planning engagement. in-market Financial Planning analysts’ team that supports Sr. Wealth Planners in selected key markets for plan creation and maintenance.


Managerial Leadership and Talent Management

  • Provides leadership, direction and planning to align tasks with overall organizational goals

  • Provide overall management and strategic direction to various teams managed by setting context, direction, defining accountabilities, tasks and assignments and establishing boundaries for decision making and approvals

  • Recruit, develop and retain a high-performing team; effectively deploy talent across the organization in accordance with the strategy and business plan

  • Coach, motivate, develop and evaluate performance of direct reports and provide guidance and mentoring to those direct reports in the resolution of complex issues

  • Set high standards and clear expectations; hold employees accountable; conduct thorough performance assessments; coach and provide candid feedback’ differentiate performers and rewards

Business Delivery and Operational Effectiveness

  • Oversees financial planning support structure; identify efficiencies and synergies of planning support resources, tools and delivery

  • Monitors and tracks team performance and manages planning team dashboards that provides insights into market and individual planning activity metrics.

  • Recommends measures to improve organizational effectiveness.

  • Oversees the design, development, and implementation of planning tools and training required to deliver business results.

  • Ensure planning technology tools are evolving to meet the needs of WPC/Clients expectations and needs via working with vendors to improve systems (reduce work arounds)

  • Oversees the quality review process of financial planning to ensure adherence to quality and remain in accordance with regulatory standards.

  • Acts as the main contact for internal/external stakeholder relationships, which includes T&O, risk management and audit teams and regulators.

  • Manages vendor relationships and periodically evaluates that licenses for the team’s various planning tools are appropriately used

  • Contributes to overall business results by making recommendations to significantly improve the client experience through planning to drive incremental growth in assets and revenue.

Strategy Development and Delivery

  • Contributes to annual strategy plan for wealth planning discipline

  • Implementation of the national planning strategy to increase the adoption of wealth planning within BMO Wealth Management LOBs

  • Define and establishes baselines and KPIs for measuring planning performance to match business requirements for analytics & reporting along with ensuring data provides insights for business decision making.

  • Seek out better ways to offering planning (competitive insight)

  • Working with Planning team leaders; oversees the needs, creation and review of all client pieces on various Wealth Planning topics from presentations slides, client flyers and thought leadership pieces.

  • Prepares strategic presentations for use in strategic planning processes.

Relationship management & collaborative prowess

  • Builds effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders

  • Networks with industry contacts to gather competitive insights and best practices.

  • Fosters strong internal and external networks and works with and across multiple teams to achieve business objectives.

  • Ability to navigate and resolve a magnitude of diverse complex financial planning situations

  • Communicate complex messages clearly and with credibility

  • Strong analytical and technical skills

    Risk Management and Control

  • Ensure proper adherence to all aspects of First Principles Our Code of Conduct and Ethics

  • Protect the Bank’s assets by adhering to all banking, investment and lending regulations (as appropriate), Policies and Procedures, legal and ethical requirements, process requirements, bank guidelines and established risk guidelines

  • Adhere to and maintain professional designations as per Regulatory bodies.


  • Typically, 10+ years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study.

  • Experience managing a team of planning professionals and working with senior leaders.

  • Detailed knowledge of financial planning principals and standards.

  • Expertise in thought leadership client facing materials.

  • Specific knowledge of Taxation, Estates, Trust and Insurance.

  • Strong working knowledge of eMoney, MoneyGuidePro, and other financial planning software and tools.

  • Must have a CFP® designation, or other professional wealth designations an asset.

  • Financial services sales experience an asset.

  • MBA/ advanced graduate degree is an asset.

  • Seasoned expert with extensive industry knowledge.

  • Technical planning software leader
